In softball, the pitcher is everything. This is a well-known truth at every level of the game — and nowhere is it more evident than in high school softball.
A dominant presence in the circle can change the outcome of a game, a season, or even a championship run. As we hit the midpoint of the 2025 high school softball season, California once again stands out as a powerhouse for elite pitching talent.
Below is a look at the state’s top performers — those redefining excellence from the rubber — based on official MaxPreps.com statistics as of April 10, 2025.
California Pitcher of the Year Watchlist
1. Ava Valenzuela, Sr., Shadow Hills
Zero is the magic number. Valenzuela owns a 0.00 ERA through 51 innings, striking out 101 batters while surrendering only 17 hits — pure dominance from start to finish.
2. Darla Sanchez, So., Marquez
One of the top arms in the LA City Section, Sanchez commands attention with a 0.13 ERA across 54 innings, racking up 106 strikeouts.
3. Mia Gonzalez, Sr., Buena Park
Gonzalez is a two-way phenom and a strong California Player of the Year candidate. She leads the entire state with 187 strikeouts in 85 innings, showing elite stamina and precision.
4. Maya Guzman, Jr., Riverbank
Guzman continues to rack up stats with 179 strikeouts in 93.1 innings across 18 games, keeping Riverbank in every matchup.
5. Mia Valbuena, Jr., Marina
Valbuena has already earned 10 wins, fueled by 174 strikeouts in 104 innings and a 2.22 ERA — impressive numbers for any level.
6. Jacy Lindsay, Sr., El Segundo
Lindsay leads the state with 14 wins in 16 appearances, backed by a 1.52 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 87.1 innings pitched.
7. Kaydn Sanchez, Jr., Santa Clara
A rare two-sport standout, Sanchez has thrown a state-best four no-hitters this season. She’s totaled 123 strikeouts in 60 innings, including back-to-back no-hitters in February.
8. Adriana Giomi, Sr., Sacred Heart Prep
Giomi’s efficiency is remarkable — she’s delivered three no-hitters in just 28.2 innings, including one perfect game.
9. Emily Yoon, Fr., El Dorado
One of the top freshmen in the nation, Yoon boasts a 10-1 record with a 0.45 ERA and 113 strikeouts in 77.2 innings. Her résumé includes five shutouts, nine complete games, and a no-hitter.
10. Annalise Ramirez, Jr., Merced
Ramirez rounds out the list with a 0.44 ERA in 18 games, allowing just nine runs all season while collecting 94 strikeouts.
